1. 研究目的与意义

Phraseology is an integral and specially highlighted component of a language, the brightest, most distinctive, culturally significant, and nationally specific, capable of concentrating not only the features of a given language but also its speakers, their attitude, mentality, national character, and style of thinking. Undoubtedly, phraseology gives the language brightness, originality, and national flavor, which distinguishes languages from each other. A student of English will surely come across idioms that they may not understand since usually phraseological units have a figurative meaning. Studying idioms and their history will help to understand their meaning and context of use.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

The main area of study is the cultural and historical aspect of the phraseological units that are used in modern English (which includes both American and British English). The main problem in learning idioms is their misuse in context and misunderstanding of their meaning. The study of the origin of idiomatic expressions can help students to track whether there are changes from the original meaning, how the idiom was originally used, and whether there are grammatical and lexical changes in the phraseological unit construction.

3. 国内外研究现状

Charles Bally (1865 - 1947), a Swiss linguist of French origin, introduced the term “phraseologie” in the meaning of “a section of stylistics that studies related phrases”, but this term was not accepted by Western European and American linguists. Bally is considered the founder of the theory of phraseology because he was the first who systematized word combinations in his book 'French Style', in which Bally included a chapter on phraseology. His studies formed the basis for the identification of phraseological mergers and the development of a theory of equivalence of a phraseological unit to a word. Since Bally''s time, the study of phraseology has progressed far ahead. Nowadays the activities of the European Society of Phraseology and the European Association for Lexicography with their regular conventions and publications attest to the prolific European interest in phraseology.
