Humor hasn#8217;t been regarded as an important subject for a long time. However, it plays a very important role in practice. From the study of humor, we can improve our application ability and show wisdom. It can let us adjust the social relationship, amuse our mood and enrich our life. Verbal humor also provides a meaningful reference for the creations of other comedies.
When it comes to American Sitcom Friends, its affection is profound and lasting. It was regarded as the greatest sitcom and the humor from this play was a model for subsequent comedies. Since the 1980s, with the development of pragmatic, more and more linguists have made great contribution of humor research from pragmatic perspective. And a lot of linguists have received great success on pragmatics, so the combination of humor and pragmatics would arouse extensive attention.
The sitcom Friends itself is worthy of studying and analyzing. It is a successful milestone of humor. The research from the pragmatic perspective will give us a new understanding of both humor and speech act theory. From studying the speech act theory, we can elaborate the generation of humor and the affections caused by humor.
2. 研究内容和预期目标
Through the study of speech act theory and the analysis of the American sitcom Friends, we can get a better understanding of humor from the pragmatic aspect. This essay will consist of ten to fifteen episodes from Friends which are selected randomly. It will make the essay specific and interesting. The speech act theory will be employed to analyze the examples of verbal humor in Friends.
Chapter one is an introduction to the significance of the study. Chapter two will introduce various definitions of humor from different dictionaries, and point out the humor of Friends is a kind of verbal humor. Chapter three is about speech act theory. Chapter four analyzes humor through specific examples from Friends. After the comparative analysis, verbal humor becomes more understandable and acceptable. Chapter five sums up the use of humor and the production of verbal humor from analyzing American sitcom through speech act theory.
3. 国内外研究现状
There are a lot of different classifications and definitions of humor. Hu Fanzhu defined it as #8220;a popular art form to express one#8217;s viewpoint and even perceptions of the real world#8221; (Hu, 1987: 7-8). He studies humor mainly from the rhetoric perspective.
From the perspective of semantics, Attardon and Raskin, who wrote the book Semantic Mechanisms of Humor (1985), have done some considerable works. But the Semantic Script Theory of Humor can#8217;t explain quality differences in humor. It means that a good joke and a bad one are indistinguishable.
The speech act theory was advocated by John L. Austin at first. His work How to Do Things with Words had an enormous impact especially in the field of pragmatics. He had set up a model to explain the way acts were performed by means of language. According to this model, speaker might be performing three acts simultaneously when speaking: locutionary act, illocutionary act and perlocutionary act (Austin, 1962). After that, speech act theory was developed and codified by the American philosopher John R. Searle. According to Searle#8217;s classification of speech acts, which are representatives, directives, commissives, expressives and declarations (Searle, 1975). Raskin (1985) thought it could also be applied to humorous speech acts.
