1. 研究目的与意义
As a social phenomenon, politeness and indirectness in daily communication have always a focus of people especially in some environment such as diplomatic occasions, religious occasions and commercial occasions.Sometimes, an opinion expressed by different people in different ways lead to different affections. The main reason causing this phenomenon is indirectness and politeness. So this topic is very significant in our communication and through analyzing factors of indirectness and politeness, I classify the functions of indirectness and politeness. I hope this research can help achieve goals in our communication.
2. 研究内容和预期目标
This essay studies the maxim of indirectness and politeness in communication in terms of linguistics. It also analyses the reasons causing the indirectness and politeness and mainly discusses the functions of indirectness and politeness in communication.

3. 国内外研究现状
1. He zhaoxiong said that we always use indirect words to express intention in our daily communication. Using indirect expression can show the politeness and avoid imposing speaker#8217;s views on listener. It also can leave room for the listener who did not obey orders (何兆熊, 1984: 9).
2. Gao junmei thinks that the inconformity between forms and functions can cause language indirectness (高俊梅, 2007: 155).
3. Politeness in communication has cultural traits. People have different views on polite words and actions in different cultural environment. People#8217;s actions and language must obey communication rules in the same cultural environment (毕继万, 1996).
