1. 研究目的与意义

The eighteenth century is the golden period of British satirical literature. Swift#8217;s Gulliver#8217;s Travels is the representative work of the literature during this period. Various social conflicts outbreak intensively at the time, Swift expressed his criticism of the society and discontent by fairy tale story. The author has carried on the pungent satire to all sorts of gaffes in society. It superb irony also let readers have a strong resonance. Therefore, analysis and research of Gulliver#8217;s Travels irony art for studying English literature and satire has important significance. For the creation of the contemporary literature also has important significance. So I chose #8220;Satire in Gulliver#8217;s Travels#8221; as my thesis topic.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

This article will talk about the use of satirical in Gulliver#8217;s Travels and different satire targets. What#8217;s more, I put forward analysis from context, are the following four parts: Lilliput, Brobdingnag, Flying Island and Houyhnhnms.

1. How Jonathan Swift is using irony, satire and satirical situation to point out problems in society and to comment upon them without directly and seriously addressing the reader. One object of satire and irony is the bureaucracy of England. During Swift#8217;s time the monarchy had a direct influence, even in the realm of law although there was a growing bureaucracy developing.(国外 Adpushup)

It analyzes the artistic devices of the Lilliput#8217;s calligraphy, Brobdingnag#8217;s prose#8217;s style, Laputa#8217;s word-formation and the language of the Country of the houyhnhnms used by Swift to satirize English Linguistics in the 18th century, comments on the point of view of narration used by Swift to satirize England and the English legislators, senators, counselors, lawyers, priests and military officers through the comments of the king of Brobdingnag, and anatomizes the exaggerated description of the number and proportion used in the novel to satirize human being#8217;s conceit, arrogance, insignificance and abjection.(国内 熊云甫,张杨莉 2008)
