1. 研究目的与意义
Practical significance:
A person without a sense of humor is supposed to be bored under high pressure. In our daily conversation, some people seem to have a talent to create humor while some are not. People from different religious and cultural background, have a different understanding of humor, so that sometimes a Chinese may not fully understand an American#8217;s humor. However, almost everyone who is watching comedy bursts out laughing. That#8217;s to say, there may be specific elements which helps humor cross over religious or cultural difference. What evokes my interest is whether there is a universal and efficient way which helps those less humor-talented people be humorous. If I prove that flouting CP contributes to producing humor, it helps in terms of being humorous and establishing a sound social relationship.

2. 研究内容和预期目标
This study is focused on how humor is produced by violating CP, the effects of CP violation on humor, and comparing the effects from four maxims. To begin with, I will review some relevant theories of humor which includes Raskin#8217;s SSTH, Attardo and Raskin#8217;s GTVH, Incongruity Theory and Post-Gricean Pragmatic. Then I approach the thesis by explaining cooperative principle and its traditional usage and effect in pragmatics. Since there are four maxims, I will analyze one by one by means of comparative and exemplification to figure out how each of them affects the producing of humor. After comparing, I will reason out why violating cooperative principle is an efficient way of producing humor. The key problem that I attempt to solve is whether violating CP is an efficient way of producing humor.
1. Exploration of humor
1.1 What#8217;s humor?
3. 国内外研究现状
The earliest scholars who investigated humor are ancient Greek philosophers (Plato and Aristotle). (张立新2012:15) They are in favor of the Superiority Theory. After that, according to this theory, an English philosopher Thomas Hobbes put forward a theory of Mockery which suggests that because of social status and physical limitation, the superior enjoys achieving a sense of satisfaction by attacking, contempting and mocking the inferior. (Holmes 2006:28) The Theory of Mockery can be used to explain any forms of humor, and I will mention it in my thesis that violating CP is more efficient than forming a sense of superiority to produce amusement.
In order to overcome the shortcomings of The Superiority Theory, Lord Shaftesburry put forward Relief Theory in one of his books-The freedom of Wit and Humor. (Ritchie 2005:280) It is developed by Freud who distinct three conditions of humor including joking, the comic and humor, which separately produced three power including suppressive energy, thinking energy and emotional energy.(Freud 2002:52)
Another theory of humor is Incongruity Theory which has two models referring to incongruity between condition set-up and condition punch line. One is The Forced Reinterpretation Model which is favored by Heller, Minsky and Paulos. (Ritchie, 2004:58) The other is The Two-Stage Model which is put forward by Suls. (Suls 1972:92)
