1. 研究目的与意义
With the unprecedented pace of globalization, the associations between different nations around the world become close. The cultural exchange between nations is getting increasingly frequent. Meanwhile, it is advocated that the regional characteristic should be reserved. Translation, as a transitional process in the content and format of two languages, involves exchange between two cultures. This dissertation explores the application of translation methods-domestication and foreignization in classical Chinese works-- A Dream of the Red Mansion. A Dream of the Red Mansion has several translated versions. The two famous versions are translated by David Hawkes(1980) from the UK and Yang Xianyi, Dai Naidie(1978) from China respectively. By comparing translation strategies adopted by translators from home and abroad, the diversity of ideology, cultural environment and social background between China and Foreign country is expected to be known. Thus, understanding diversity is conducive to handle with the barriers translators meet in their works and help them choose suitable strategies. This progress will make contributions to further study of the translation of classical works and promote the cultural communication and development between various countries.
2. 研究内容和预期目标
In general, there are two basic strategies of cultural conversion in translation, that is, domestication and foreignization. Domestication is oriented towards the target language, while foreignization is based on the source text. However, whether we should adopt domestication or foreignization in a specific language environment is a controversial topic.
This dissertation starts from the background that domestication and foreignization were put forward, then analyzes relationship and the value of application. At first, through the elaboration on the theory of domestication and foreignization, I will know the connotation and theoretical basis of the both. Secondly, l will focus on the application of the two strategies in the translation of A Dream of the Red Mansion, investigating deeply into character#8217;s names, idioms and poems. Through the contrastive Analysis of the two strategies in the two English versions, it will be clear for me to figure out what strategies translators have adopted are the same or different, which is conducive to the choice of strategy.
In this dissertation, the key problem needs to be solved is how to deal with diversity when reaching target readers and choose suitable strategies in the translation of A Dream of the Red Mansion.
3. 国内外研究现状
Concerning the theory of domestication and foreignization, numerous studies have been carried out by scholars from both home and abroad. In western countries, in 1813, German linguistic philosopher Friedrich Schleiermacher delivered a speech to put forward two ways for translation: #8220;one is to let the author remain there and lead readers to approach the author, and the other is to make the author approach readers while readers remain there#8221; (Schleiermacher,1813). However, the two methods did not have specific term. In 1995, Lawrence Venuti proposed the theory with his book The Translator''''s Invisibility: A History of Translation, applying it to the field of translation studies. (Venuti,1995). In 1998. he wrote a book The Scandals of Translation: Towards an Ethics of Difference.(Venuti,1998). He named the first method as foreignizing method, the other as domesticating method. He believes that domestication and foreignization are methods to transform a foreign text to the translating language and culture. He is in favor of the theory of foreignization, which is a more ethical choice for translators.[21] Another person represents the school of domestication is E.A.Nida who is famous for the theory of Dynamic Equivalence.[2]
In China, between 1870s and 1970s, domestication took dominance in the field of translation. Scholars like Yan Fu, Lin Shu, Mao Dun, Fu Lei, Qian Zhongshu are all influential advocates of domestication. Yan Fu advocates #8220;faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance#8221;;(严复,1971) Fu Lei put forward #8220;spiritual likeness#8221;;(傅雷,1957) Qian Zhongshu encourages #8220;conversion#8221;.(钱钟书,1985) They hold the same purpose that is to make the reader feel easy to comprehend the work. Not until 1920s when western translation theories were introduced into China, did other scholars paid equal attention to both domestication and foreignization. As early as in 1933, Lu Xun pointed out that exotic feeling should be reserved. He is a supporter of foreignization.[16] In 1987, Liu Yingkai criticized domestication severely and advocated #8220;transformation#8221; strongly.[15] After that, foreignization plays a leading role in the translation field until present day. In 2002, Sun Zhili argued that foreignization should be regarded as the major one while domestication plays auxiliary role.[18]
4. 计划与进度安排
(1) Search for references like essays, journals, books and internet that are relevant to the topic, collect materials and make notes.
(2) With the guidance of tutor, confirm the outline and writing ideas.
(3) Investigating deeply into works, then analyze, study, comb and summarize the collected materials.
